TI-84 help that explains the whole screen

The TI-84 graphing calculator is essential for high school algebra, statistics, precalculus and AP exams. Our tutorials break every operation into short keystrokes, show you what the screen should look like, and fix the error messages that stop students mid-problem.

Why these guides are easier to follow

Exact keystrokes

Keys are written the way they are printed on the calculator — 2nd, MODE, STAT — so you never translate a symbol in your head.

You see the screen

Every step includes a screen figure showing what the display should look like, so you can tell instantly whether you are on track.

Errors explained first

When something goes wrong, the error page tells you the cause and the fix rather than repeating a manual you have already read.

What a screen figure looks like

Here is the kind of figure that appears in every tutorial — an accurate drawing of the display after a specific set of keystrokes, so you can compare it against your own calculator before moving on.

Common TI-84 questions

Can a TI-84 solve equations automatically?

Yes, up to a point. On the TI-84 Plus and TI-84 Plus CE you can solve a single equation for one unknown with the interactive solver (MATH ▸ 0:Solver), and you can solve linear systems exactly with the PlySmlt2 app found in the APPS menu on the TI-84 Plus CE. The solver finds one numerical solution near a starting guess, so equations with several solutions need a different guess for each one. On the SAT, remember that some of these app tools are restricted — check the exam page before relying on them.

Can a TI-84 connect to a Chromebook?

A TI-84 Plus or TI-84 Plus CE cannot connect directly to a Chromebook through TI Connect software, because that software runs on Windows and macOS only. The practical options are: use a USB cable plus a Windows or Mac computer to transfer files, transfer calculator-to-calculator with a unit-to-unit link cable, or move programs as plain text files that you type or paste in. Texas Instruments also offers the TI Connect CE app for Chrome OS in some school deployments, but support varies — check with your teacher.

How do I clear or reset a TI-84?

Pressing 2nd then + (MEM) opens the memory menu, where 2:Reset gives you options to clear RAM, reset defaults like the window and mode settings, or reset everything including archived apps. Clearing RAM keeps the operating system and archive but wipes RAM lists, programs and settings. Follow the steps in our reset guide so you do not delete archived programs you still need.

Why is my TI-84 screen blank after I press ON?

The usual causes are dead or weak batteries, a display contrast turned all the way down, or an app or shell that has taken over the screen. First press 2nd and hold the up arrow to raise the contrast. If that fails, install fresh alkaline batteries, then press ON. If the calculator is still blank after that, remove the batteries, hold and release ON, and reinsert the batteries — this performs a hard reset of the RAM.
